At Stoneygate Nursery School, we are committed to supporting the safety, wellbeing, and emotional development of all children. We are proud to be part of Operation Encompass, a national initiative that helps schools provide timely and sensitive support to children who may have experienced domestic abuse.

What is Operation Encompass?

Operation Encompass is a partnership between schools and the police. It ensures that when the police attend an incident of domestic abuse, where a child is present or may be affected, the school is notified before the start of the next school day.

This information is shared with a trained member of staff known as the Key Adult.

Why is this Important?

We recognise that domestic abuse is an Adverse Childhood Experience (ACE) and can have a significant impact on a child’s emotional wellbeing, behaviour, and ability to learn.

By receiving this information promptly, we can:

• Provide immediate care and understanding

• Offer a calm and nurturing environment

• Support children in a sensitive and appropriate way

• Help children feel safe and secure in school

How We Support Children

At Stoneygate Nursery School, our aim is to provide a nurturing and supportive environment where children feel safe, valued, and understood.

Following a notification, staff may:

• Offer additional emotional support

• Be particularly attentive to the child’s needs

• Provide reassurance and stability

• Adjust expectations where appropriate

We do this in a discreet and child-centred way, always prioritising the child’s wellbeing.

Key Adult

The Key Adult responsible for Operation Encompass in our school is: Mrs N Hunt; Designated Safeguarding Lead 
 

The Key Adult has received specific training to manage and respond to this information appropriately.

Confidentiality and Safeguarding

All information shared through Operation Encompass is:

• Treated as strictly confidential

• Stored securely in line with safeguarding and data protection policies

• Shared only with staff who need to know in order to support the child

We follow all statutory safeguarding guidance to ensure information is handled appropriately and sensitively.
